Travel Insurance: Medevac Value

January 27th, 2012

Why is medical evacuation an important consideration when looking to buy travel insurance? Medical evacuation is a chartered transport that is normally carried out by flight for someone who has a medical condition that restricts them from returning home on their own. A medical evacuation will normally involve being transported with a medical professional overseeing your vitals as well as any form of life-sustaining equipment that will stabilize your condition during travel. Most HMO insurance will include international healthcare coverage but does not include international medical transport. Without purchasing an international travel insurance policy, medical evacuation can be pretty expensive. Typically there are a couple of instances when a traveler would require a medevac. It can be post-op or post hospitalization where you are not strong enough to make the travel on your own or when a less developed area does not have the right medical facilities to treat you.
